New Delhi, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : In New Delhi, mobile internet services will be suspended for 24 hours in a four-kilometer radius around the Janpath-Kartavya Path crossing. This measure comes ahead of a planned protest on October 10. According to an order issued by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell, the suspension will take effect from 10 PM on October 9 until 10 PM on October 10. The Ministry of Home Affairs has approved this temporary measure.
The directive applies to all mobile internet technologies. The Delhi Police has instructed telecom providers, including Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, Jio, and MTNL, to ensure compliance with the order. This suspension is issued under the Telecommunication Act of 2023 and the Telecommunication Service Suspension Rules of 2024.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has directed that metro and other rail services in Delhi should not be completely halted in light of the upcoming protest. The court urged the central government to take necessary steps to ensure controlled operations of these services, preventing unnecessary inconvenience to the public.
A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and including Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohan, issued this directive. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that officials would reconsider the restrictions imposed due to the planned protest.
The demonstration is organized by the Cockroach Public Party (CJP) to demand accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Supreme Court noted that the key question is whether a complete halt to train and rail services from certain metro stations is an appropriate and proportionate restriction in light of the anticipated protest. The bench clarified the difference between a complete halt to movement and the controlled operation of services, emphasizing that authorities should consider the principle of proportionality when taking precautionary measures.
Based on the Solicitor General’s assurance, the court stated that there would not be a complete stop to metro train operations. It also instructed officials to widely publicize decisions related to controlled operations, ensuring that passengers receive timely information.
