Night Guard Shot During Robbery Attempt in Asansol, West Bengal

Asansol, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : In a troubling incident in Asansol, West Bengal, a night guard was shot while attempting to thwart a robbery on Saturday night. The guard, identified as Haridas Layak, was seriously injured during the confrontation, according to local police reports.

The robbery unfolded when a group of masked assailants stopped Layak on a deserted road while he was riding his motorcycle. Despite their attempts to intimidate him, Layak fought back, leading to a brief struggle. Unable to subdue him, the robbers opened fire, hitting him multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Layak has been admitted to a local hospital, where his condition is now reported as stable. He works as a night guard at the Srihari Global School in the West Bardhaman district. A resident of Dhaguri village in the Salanpur area, he typically rides his motorcycle to work each night.

On the night of the incident, Layak was en route to the school when he was ambushed by the robbers, who displayed weapons and demanded his valuables. Despite sustaining injuries to his legs, he continued to resist, ultimately leaving him on the ground as the attackers escaped.

Police officials from the Salanpur station responded promptly to the scene. They found Layak bleeding and rushed him to Asansol District Hospital, where he underwent surgery that same night.

On Sunday morning, investigators recovered an empty cartridge casing from the site. Authorities have initiated a search operation to track down the assailants and are conducting ‘naka’ checks in the area. They are also reviewing nearby CCTV footage for leads. Senior police officials, including Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner Pranab Kumar, visited the location, highlighting the growing concern over safety in the area following this brazen attempt at robbery.
