Amritsar, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant crackdown on drug and arms trafficking, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police has made substantial progress in Punjab. Authorities have arrested eight individuals linked to three major trafficking networks that supplied illegal drugs and weapons.
Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) announced the operation via a post on his official social media account. He highlighted the successful uncovering of these networks, stating, “In a major achievement, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police has exposed three significant networks involved in the supply of drugs and illegal arms. We have arrested eight suspects and seized 9.549 kilograms of heroin, 5.459 kilograms of opium, and a .30-bore illegal pistol.”
The seized heroin and opium are estimated to be worth millions in the international market. Initial investigations revealed shocking connections, with the suspects reportedly linked to traffickers operating across the border. They were allegedly using drones to smuggle heroin, opium, and illegal weapons from Pakistan into various districts of Punjab.
The DGP further explained, “Preliminary investigations indicate that the accused were connected to traffickers based abroad. They were using drones to import heroin, opium, and illegal arms for distribution.” The police have also identified connections between the accused and their accomplices within the supply network.
Separate FIRs have been filed at the Cantonment, A-Division, and Chheharta police stations in Amritsar. Officials assert that this operation is just one part of a broader effort to dismantle the entire supply chain, with investigations ongoing.
Law enforcement is now focusing on the suspects’ bank accounts, call records, and identifying other associates to track down everyone involved in this network. The investigation also aims to determine the origins of the drones, their drop-off locations, and the foreign handlers behind the operation. Punjab Police have emphasized their commitment to monitoring cross-border trafficking closely.
The DGP stated, “Punjab Police is dedicated to keeping a vigilant eye on cross-border smuggling and taking strict action against drug trafficking, illegal arms supply, and organized criminal networks.” In recent months, Punjab Police have uncovered several cases of smuggling conducted via drones, thanks to joint operations carried out in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF), which have led to continuous seizures of heroin and weapons.
