Major Boost for Make in India as Cabinet Approves Two New Semiconductor Projects

New Delhi, May 5: Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet has approved two new semiconductor projects as part of India’s Semiconductor Mission. This decision is considered a significant step towards strengthening chip manufacturing in the country.

Both projects will be established in Gujarat, with a total investment of approximately ₹3,936 crores. These initiatives are expected to create around 2,230 skilled jobs.

One of the projects will feature the country’s first commercial mini/micro-LED display facility, based on Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology. Additionally, a semiconductor packaging unit will also be set up.

The first major project will be developed by Crystal Matrix Limited in Dholera, Gujarat. This plant will focus on compound semiconductor manufacturing, assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP), with a particular emphasis on producing mini/micro-LED display modules.

This unit will also provide GaN foundry services and will produce 72,000 square meters of display panels and 24,000 RGB wafers annually. These products will be utilized in new technology devices such as TVs, smartphones, automotive displays, smartwatches, and XR (extended reality) applications.

The second project will be established by Suchi Semicon Private Limited in Surat. This will be an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) unit, expected to produce over 1,033 million chips each year.

These chips will be used in power electronics, analog circuits, and industrial systems, benefiting sectors like automotive, industrial automation, and consumer electronics.

With these two new projects, the total number of projects under India’s Semiconductor Mission has reached 12, with total investments climbing to approximately ₹1.64 lakh crores.

The government believes that this will enhance India’s semiconductor capabilities and further support the country’s growing strength in chip design.

Additionally, the government has announced that 315 educational institutions and 104 startups are receiving design infrastructure support to promote the semiconductor sector in the country.

Work is progressing rapidly on several previously approved projects, with two units already in production and two more set to commence operations soon.
