Mahua Moitra Acknowledges Peoples Decision Amid TMCs Setback in West Bengal Elections

Kolkata, May 5: In response to the Trinamool Congress’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra stated on Tuesday that the party fought valiantly on an uneven playing field and respects the people’s decision to choose the BJP.

Her comments come as the BJP is poised to form the next government in West Bengal with a decisive two-thirds majority, marking the end of the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra expressed on the social media platform X, “The will of the people is paramount. If Bengal wanted the BJP, then it has received the BJP. We respect that. Despite facing unimaginable challenges, we stood firm and fought on an uneven playing field, and I am proud of my leader and my party for that.”

She added, “We will continue to stand for a secular nation where the Constitution is supreme, not autocratic majoritarianism. Jai Hind.”

In the results announced on May 4, the BJP secured 206 seats, significantly outpacing the Trinamool Congress, which managed only 81 seats. TMC chief and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes in the Bhabanipur constituency.

The Congress won two seats, while CPI(M) secured one. The AISF and the Aam Janata Unnayan Party won one and two seats, respectively.

The majority mark in the 294-member assembly is 148. Results for 293 constituencies were declared on Monday, while a re-poll for the Falta seat in South 24 Parganas is scheduled for May 21, with counting set for May 24, as announced by the Election Commission of India.

In this election, the BJP received 46% of the votes, while the Trinamool Congress garnered 41%. The Left Front received 4%, Congress 3%, and other parties, including AISF and AJUP, collectively received 6%.

The Trinamool Congress failed to win any seats in ten districts, including Cooch Behar, East Midnapore, Jalpaiguri, and Darjeeling, and lost in all tribal and Matua-majority constituencies.
