New Delhi, June 26: Senior Indian Police Service officer Mahesh Dixit has been appointed as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) as of Thursday. He succeeds the current director, Tapan Kumar Deka.
The appointment has been approved by the Cabinet Appointment Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mahesh Dixit, an IPS officer from the 1993 Andhra Pradesh cadre, will serve a term of two years or until further notice as the head of the IB.
An official statement confirmed that the appointment committee has sanctioned Mahesh Dixit’s role as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau. Previously, he served as the Special Director within the agency, taking over from Tapan Kumar Deka, an officer from the 1988 Himachal Pradesh cadre.
Dixit’s tenure will last for two years from the date of assuming office or until further orders, with an extension of service granted for this position.
He is regarded as one of the most experienced officers within the IB, having spent a significant part of his career in Jammu and Kashmir, where he led the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in Srinagar.
During his time there, he monitored intelligence activities in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, playing a crucial role in overseeing security conditions following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
Mahesh Dixit has extensive experience in counter-terrorism operations and has held several key responsibilities within the IB. He has dealt with challenges related to Pakistan-backed infiltration networks, activities linked to extremism, and threats from left-wing extremism.
The Intelligence Bureau is India’s premier internal security and intelligence agency operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is considered one of the oldest intelligence agencies in the world, tasked with gathering intelligence within the country, combating terrorism, and ensuring the security of critical infrastructure.
