Mumbai, April 3: The General Administration Department of Maharashtra, operating under the Chief Minister, has decided to impose restrictions on the appointment of IT and non-IT consultants across government departments, corporations, and authorities.
According to the government order, no department will be allowed to appoint more than two IT consultants. Additionally, the appointment of other consultants will only be permitted after following a specified procedure.
The government has observed that numerous departments, regional offices, and corporations have been hiring a significant number of consultants under the guise of “consulting services.” This trend has particularly increased the hiring of retired officials for these positions.
The order states that each department can only retain a maximum of two IT consultants. Departments currently employing more than two consultants can continue until April 30, 2026, but from May 1, 2026, no department will be allowed to have more than two IT consultants under any circumstances.
Furthermore, prior approval from the Directorate of Information Technology will be mandatory for the appointment of any type of consultant. The responsibility for ensuring compliance with these regulations will fall on department heads and office chiefs. However, these rules will not apply to the Chief Minister’s office, the Deputy Chief Minister’s office, the Chief Secretary’s office, the IT department, and the Directorate of Information Technology.
This decision follows Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s statement emphasizing that all departments should operate with transparency, timeliness, and trust, ensuring that citizens can easily benefit from government schemes and achieve the goal of a developed Maharashtra.
He made these remarks during an event organized under the 150-day e-governance reform program, where outstanding officials and employees were also recognized.
Chief Minister Fadnavis has directed the IT department to implement the ‘One State, One Portal’ initiative. The aim is to eliminate the confusion caused by multiple government websites and provide all services on a single platform. He stated that simplifying access to government services for citizens should be the top priority.
