Mumbai, June 23: The Maharashtra government has announced a significant salary and allowance increase for employees of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik made this announcement during the monsoon session of the state assembly on Tuesday. The decision has been welcomed by the corporation’s employees.
In the assembly, the minister stated that several financial benefits have been approved, keeping the interests and rights of MSRTC employees in mind. The dearness allowance for state transport employees has been raised from 53% to 58%, marking a 5% increase.
Additionally, the rates for the House Rent Allowance (HRA) have also been revised. Previously set at 8%, 16%, and 24%, these rates have been increased to 10%, 20%, and 30%, respectively, based on the classification of cities.
The government has also improved the annual salary increment for employees. Previously, employees received a 2% salary increase each year, which has now been raised to 3%.
This decision will impose an additional monthly burden of approximately ₹45 crore on the already financially challenged MSRTC. The minister emphasized that ensuring justice and rights for employees is the government’s priority, and the financial burden is a secondary concern.
MSRTC employees have long demanded better wages, an increase in the dearness allowance, and improved working conditions. There have been several strikes and protests in the past regarding these demands. The government’s decision is seen as a significant step towards fulfilling these longstanding requests.
Meanwhile, the transport minister issued a stern warning to the private transport sector. He stated that the government will maintain a ‘zero tolerance’ policy regarding illegal parcel and freight transport by private buses. He clarified that strict legal action will be taken against private bus operators who violate regulations.
