Mumbai, May 2: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Saturday that the accused in the rape and murder of a minor in Pune has been arrested. He stated that the case will be tried in a fast-track court, and a demand will be made for the death penalty.
In a media briefing, Chief Minister Fadnavis condemned the incident, saying, “The Pune incident is extremely reprehensible. A 65-year-old man has committed rape and murdered an innocent girl. The accused has been apprehended, and we will seek the death penalty for such a criminal.”
Earlier, Maharashtra Minister Yogesh Kadam mentioned that the investigation is ongoing and efforts are being made to ensure the harshest punishment for the perpetrator.
The tragic event occurred in Nasrapur village, Pune. Initial reports indicate that the case came to light when the girl went missing in the afternoon, prompting her family to search for her. During the search, her mutilated and bloodied body was discovered. CCTV footage from the area allegedly shows the elderly man taking the young girl with him, aiding the police in identifying and detaining him.
The local community is outraged by this heinous act. Angry villagers blocked the Pune-Bengaluru highway on Saturday. One resident expressed, “I stand with this grieving community. While we live under the rule of law, the continuous failure of fast-track courts to deliver timely justice has eroded public trust. When justice takes years, criminals lose their fear of the law, perpetuating this cycle of violence.”
Pune Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill reported that a girl was brutally assaulted and murdered in Nasrapur village. The accused, a 65-year-old man from the nearby area, lured the girl to commit this horrific crime. He stated that the incident occurred between 3:30 PM and 4 PM on Friday, and the police received information around 5:15 PM. Upon receiving the report, police acted swiftly, detaining the accused within an hour to an hour and a half.
SP Gill confirmed that a charge sheet will be filed against the accused within 15 days, and the case will be heard in a fast-track court. He assured the protesters that the police would take stringent action in this matter.
