New Delhi, August 26: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has commenced construction of the Shivaji Stadium Metro Station as part of the Central Vista Corridor. Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu hailed this development as a significant milestone.
Sandhu stated, “The initiation of work at the Shivaji Stadium site marks a major achievement for the Delhi Metro. The expansion of the metro in Delhi has truly transformed the city. We are fully committed to providing all necessary support and cooperation for its continuous progress and expansion.”
According to a DMRC statement, the Shivaji Stadium Station is being constructed under Phase V(A) as an extension of the existing Magenta Line from Janakpuri West to R.K. Ashram Marg.
The new station is expected to greatly benefit employees working in nearby areas, school students, pilgrims visiting the Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, and passengers traveling on the Airport Express Line.
The Central Vista Corridor spans approximately 9.913 kilometers and will feature nine underground stations, including Shivaji Stadium, Yuge Yugeen Bharat, Central Secretariat, Kartavya Bhawan, India Gate, War Memorial-High Court, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam, and Indraprastha.
Shivaji Stadium Metro Station will be underground and will serve as a crucial interchange facility. The new Magenta Line station will connect seamlessly with the existing Shivaji Stadium Airport Express Line station via a 230-meter-long subway, facilitating easy interchange between the two metro corridors.
Additionally, the Shivaji Stadium Metro Station will link to Rajiv Chowk Metro Station through an 800-meter-long subway equipped with travellators, enhancing pedestrian access between the two stations.
The diaphragm wall at the new Shivaji Stadium Station will be approximately 38 meters deep, equivalent to the height of a 12-story building. This depth is necessary as the station will be located beneath the existing Airport Express Line alignment.
As a result, significant movement of construction vehicles is anticipated during the construction of the Shivaji Stadium Metro Station. The statement indicated that around 500 transit mixer trips will be required monthly for approximately 3,000 cubic meters of concrete. In contrast, around 750 dumper trips will be necessary each month for approximately 15,000 cubic meters of excavation, meaning around 25 dumper trips daily to remove the excavated soil.
The commencement of work on the Shivaji Stadium Metro Station under the Central Vista Corridor represents another crucial step in enhancing Delhi Metro connectivity in Central New Delhi. Construction at the Central Secretariat Metro Station under the same corridor began on June 24, 2026.
The completion of the Central Vista Corridor will improve connectivity to key government offices, judicial institutions, national monuments, and convention facilities. It will also enhance network integration, operational efficiency, and passenger convenience in Central New Delhi.
