Madurais Chithirai Festival Begins with Tight Security Measures

Madurai, April 27: The renowned Chithirai Festival has commenced in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. In light of the celebrations, strict security measures have been implemented, along with extensive traffic restrictions. A large influx of devotees is expected to participate in the main rituals over the next three days.

According to police, comprehensive crowd management strategies have been established around the Meenakshi Amman Temple. Major events, including the darshan of Meenakshi Amman, the divine marriage (Thirukalyanam), and the grand chariot procession, will take place from Monday to Wednesday.

Officials have stated that these restrictions aim to facilitate the movement of devotees while preventing congestion within the temple premises and surrounding streets. Traffic diversions have been enforced on the city’s main routes. While mini trucks and other commercial vehicles will be allowed to enter and exit the city at designated times, there will be a complete ban on their movement on four main roads from 10 PM on Tuesday until 3 PM the following day.

Special restrictions have also been imposed for processions associated with the festival, including the ‘Dikkuvijayam’ event on Keezh Masi Street. During this time, commercial vehicles will not be permitted on any of the Masi streets. However, limited access will be allowed on other Masi streets from Monday night until 2 AM on Tuesday.

Parking restrictions in festival areas will be strictly enforced. Police have announced that from 10 PM on Monday until 2 PM on Tuesday, parking for general vehicles will be prohibited on all four Avani Moola streets. Additionally, from 10 PM on Tuesday until the conclusion of the temple’s chariot procession, no vehicles (including two-wheelers) will be allowed to park on any of the four Masi streets surrounding the temple.

Authorities have also declared a complete ban on vehicle movement on Keezh Masi Street and Keezhamarath Street throughout Wednesday. Vehicles will only be permitted on other Masi streets during specified times.

To manage the large crowds, designated parking areas have been established. Vehicles will be allowed to park on all four Merit streets in a manner that does not obstruct traffic or pedestrian movement.

Starting Tuesday morning, a permit-based parking system has been implemented on Avani Moola streets, with specific zones designated for different types of permit holders.

Police have urged attendees, including those participating in weddings in the area, to adhere to parking regulations and avoid congestion. Vehicles without permits should be parked along East, South, and North Masi streets in a way that does not impede traffic flow.

Officials emphasized that these coordinated measures are essential to ensure a safe and organized celebration of one of Tamil Nadu’s largest religious festivals.
