Madhya Pradeshs New Law: Only Monogamous Marriages to Have Residency Rights

Bhopal, July 17: The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav, announced on Friday that under the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), only individuals in monogamous marriages will have the right to reside in the state. His government plans to introduce this bill during the upcoming monsoon session of the Assembly, starting on July 20.

Yadav made this declaration while inaugurating newly constructed Sandipani schools in the Jhinjhari and Bahoriband areas of Katni district. He emphasized that the new UCC law will apply to people of all religions in Madhya Pradesh.

With blessings from Lord Ram, Yadav stated that Madhya Pradesh is moving towards “one nation, one constitution, one flag, and one law.” The UCC aims to provide equal legal rights for all citizens, regardless of their faith.

The monsoon session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly will take place from July 20 to July 25, during which the BJP government is expected to present the UCC bill. Yadav has previously reiterated that the proposed UCC will recognize only one marriage in the state.

To draft the proposed law, the state government has formed a committee that has already submitted its report. If the bill is passed, Madhya Pradesh will become the second state, after Uttarakhand, to implement the Uniform Civil Code.

This announcement holds significant political weight, as the BJP has consistently supported the implementation of the UCC. It was a key promise in the party’s election manifesto and remains a crucial part of its broader national agenda.

During the event in Katni, CM Yadav also inaugurated two Sandipani schools, highlighting the importance of education and cultural values while reaffirming the government’s commitment to introducing the UCC in the upcoming Assembly session.
