Madhya Pradeshs Chief Minister Mohan Yadav Releases Rare Turtles and Gharials into Una River

Bhopal, March 2: The Madhya Pradesh government has taken a significant step towards wildlife conservation. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited Kuno National Park in Shyopur district on Sunday and released newborn gharials and endangered turtles into the Una River.

During the event, CM Yadav released 53 young gharials (28 males and 25 females) into the river. These gharials had been cared for over the past two years and are now safely reintroduced into their natural habitat to boost their population and restore the river ecosystem’s balance.

Alongside the gharials, 25 newborn three-striped roofed turtles, a species on the brink of extinction, were also released into the river.

The Chief Minister stated, “This not only gives these ancient river dwellers a fresh start but also sends a strong message about our commitment to sustainable conservation and community involvement, making Madhya Pradesh a model for the protection of endangered species.”

He emphasized that these ancient creatures, remnants from the age of dinosaurs, play a crucial role in the river ecosystem, helping to keep the water clean and maintain ecological balance.

Referring to the Una River’s tributary, the Chief Minister noted, “Recently, we achieved a significant milestone by releasing 53 gharial hatchlings into their natural habitat. These gharials, raised in a controlled environment for about two and a half years, are now being returned to their natural surroundings. This effort will not only increase their population but also provide an incredible experience for tourists while significantly contributing to environmental conservation.”

He added that gharials and crocodiles coexist within the river ecosystem and symbolize ancient biodiversity that has survived for thousands of years.

Furthermore, he mentioned, “We have also released the rare three-striped roofed turtle into clean, free-flowing water streams to enhance their population in river areas.”

Highlighting conservation efforts in the region, CM Yadav stated that the Palpur-Kuno area of the Chambal region is rich in natural resources and supports rural livelihoods.

He also shared, “Recently, we released eight more cheetahs into the wild. This has boosted our confidence in conservation efforts. Initially, 12 out of 20 cheetahs survived, and through breeding, the population increased from 12 to 38. After releasing nine more cheetahs, the number has now reached 48. This has been a challenging task.”
