Madhya Pradesh Receives 47% Above Normal Rainfall This Season; Flood Alerts Issued in Several Districts

Bhopal, August 5 (H.S.): Madhya Pradesh has recorded 28.6 inches of rainfall so far this monsoon season, which is 47 percent above normal, according to the latest data released by the Meteorological Department. This accounts for 77 percent of the season’s quota, with the full target likely to be achieved by the end of August.

Guna and Niwari Witness Record Rainfall

Among all districts, Guna recorded the highest rainfall with 45.8 inches, followed closely by Niwari at 45.1 inches. Mandla and Tikamgarh reported 44 inches, while Ashoknagar received 42 inches of rainfall.

The eastern divisions of Jabalpur, Sagar, Shahdol, and Rewa recorded 51 percent more rainfall than average. In the western regions — including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, and Narmadapuramrainfall has been 43 percent above normal. In Raisen, the Betwa River swelled, submerging fields, temples, and bridges. Several dams remain close to danger levels.

Heavy Rain Alert in Gwalior and Morena

The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for Gwalior, Morena, and other nearby districts. Moderate rainfall with lightning is likely in Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Sagar, Datia, Shivpuri, Bhind, and Sheopur Kalan.

Due to uneven rainfall distribution, areas like Indore, Ujjain, Burhanpur, Barwani, Khargone, and Khandwa have received below-average rainfall. Indore has recorded just 11 inches, while Khandwa has reported 12.8 inches so far.

Heavy Rain Likely to Resume in Second Week of August

Senior meteorologist Dr. Divya E. Surendran stated that another spell of heavy rain is expected to begin in the second week of August and may continue till the end of the month. While Raksha Bandhan may see milder weather, Independence Day could experience heavy rainfall.

Meteorologist Deepak Shakya forecasted moderate rain with lightning in regions such as Tikamgarh, South Chhatarpur/Khajuraho, and North Sagar, while light rain is expected in Niwari/Orchha, North Chhatarpur, South Sagar, Datia/Ratangarh, Shivpuri, Gwalior/AP, Bhind, Morena, Sheopur Kalan, Panna/TR, Sidhi, Singrauli, Anuppur/Amarkantak, Shahdol/Bansagar Dam, Umaria/Bandhavgarh, Dindori, and Balaghat.

During midnight hours, moderate to light rainfall was observed in Mandla/Kanha, Narmadapuram/Pachmarhi, Bhopal/Bairagarh, Vidisha/Udaigiri, Raisen/Bhimbetka/Sanchi, Narsinghpur, Rajgarh, Shajapur, Guna, Ashoknagar, Sehore, Agar, Ujjain/Mahakaleshwar, Indore/AP, Dewas, and Damoh. Daytime temperatures also showed an increase. The current weather pattern is expected to continue across the state until August 10.

Rainfall Aids Agriculture, But Floods Cause Damage

The consistent rainfall has helped boost Kharif crop sowing, giving farmers hope for a better yield this year. However, the intense rain and flood-like conditions have also caused significant damage.

On Monday, amid flood-hit conditions in Guna, Shivpuri, and Ashoknagar, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia visited affected areas and assured people of necessary government assistance.

According to data from various government agencies, between June and July, 275 people lost their lives, 1,657 animals perished, and 3,980 houses were damaged. Additionally, over 254 roads and bridges were reported to be damaged across the state.
