Bhopal, February 18: The Madhya Pradesh government’s third budget was presented by Finance Minister Jagdish Deora in the assembly on Wednesday. While the government claims that this budget pays special attention to all sections of society, the opposition has expressed disappointment. Congress leader Jitu Patwari stated that this budget deceives the public.
In a conversation in Bhopal, Patwari remarked that the government has presented a hefty budget, yet it remains unclear how the fiscal deficit will be addressed. He pointed out that in the previous budget, the government failed to utilize even 50% of the allocated funds. Currently, 33 schemes in Madhya Pradesh are inactive, and this budget does not provide any solutions for them. It feels as though Madhya Pradesh is being treated like a Union Territory.
Patwari further criticized the state government, suggesting that instead of focusing on dog sterilization, it should address the ‘corruption’ within its own ranks. He asserted that only then can the state emerge from its economic crisis. He described the current budget as one that drains the lifeblood of the people.
Congress leader Umang Singhar echoed these sentiments, stating that the government has admitted that the fiscal deficit will exceed ₹74,000 crore. With an empty treasury, he questioned the basis of the promises made in the budget. There is no mention of doubling farmers’ incomes, creating jobs for youth, or addressing employee dearness allowances. Key issues affecting the public are entirely absent. The common people are facing high electricity costs, with no announcements to reduce rates, while private companies continue to benefit.
In a post, Singhar noted that the Madhya Pradesh BJP government has presented a budget of ₹4.38 lakh crore while acknowledging that their poor policies have led to a debt of ₹6 lakh crore on the state. The budget fails to clarify that each individual in the state bears a debt of over ₹60,000, with farmers facing millions in debt. How will they cope with this?
The opposition claims that the budget indicates that 16% of the state’s revenue goes towards paying interest on debt, which exceeds the budget of any department. Although the government announced 2026 as the Year of Farmer Welfare, there is no allocation for farmers in the budget. The government boasts of attracting ₹33 lakh crore in investments during the Global Investor Summit, yet it has not disclosed how much investment has actually materialized from the past seven summits or how many jobs were created, lacking any data to support these claims.
