New Delhi, August 1: Making a place in the Indian cricket team has always been a challenging task. Many cricketers have excelled in domestic cricket yet never received an opportunity to represent the national team. M.V. Shridhar is one such cricketer.
Born on August 2, 1966, in Vijayawada, Shridhar showed an early interest in cricket. He was a right-handed batsman and also bowled part-time off-spin.
Shridhar made his first-class debut for Hyderabad in the 1988-89 season. His domestic career spanned nearly a decade, during which he became a key batsman and set numerous records. However, he never got the chance to play for the Indian team.
Looking at his domestic career, Shridhar played 97 first-class matches, scoring 6,701 runs in 150 innings, including 21 centuries and 27 half-centuries. Notably, he scored a triple century, amassing 366 runs in a Ranji Trophy match against Andhra Pradesh in the 1993-94 season. This remarkable innings established him as a popular batsman in domestic cricket. Despite this achievement, the doors of the national team remained closed for him. He played his last match for Hyderabad in the 1998-99 season.
In 2013, during N. Srinivasan’s tenure, M.V. Shridhar took on the role of General Manager at the BCCI but resigned in September of the same year. Tragically, he passed away from a heart attack at the age of 51 on October 30, 2017. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. Today, this Hyderabad legend is still regarded as a respected batsman in domestic cricket.
