Chennai, 20 November (Daily Kiran): A new low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen in the next 48 hours, according to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Weather models indicate that a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin Sea and nearby areas is gradually moving west-northwest and may soon develop into a more organised low-pressure area.
Meteorologists said another low-pressure system is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Friday or the following day. This system is also expected to move west-northwest and intensify within 48 hours. If conditions remain favourable, it could further strengthen into a depression, bringing heavy rainfall to coastal and interior parts of Tamil Nadu.
Due to changing weather patterns, heavy rainfall is expected today in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts, where intermittent rain has already been reported in recent days. Some areas may also experience strong winds along with heavy showers.
Local authorities have been alerted, and disaster response teams have been asked to remain on standby. Light thunderstorms with rain are also likely in Chennai and neighbouring suburban areas.
IMD officials said convective activity may increase during the evening, which could lead to sudden intense showers. People have been advised to stay safe during lightning and avoid open and waterlogged areas.
Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining waters as wind speeds are expected to rise due to the developing system. Sea conditions may become rough, posing risks to small boats and trawlers.
Weather scientists noted that this is the second major disturbance during the current phase of the northeast monsoon. With moist winds strengthening over the Bay, more rainfall is likely in Tamil Nadu over the coming days, especially along coastal regions.
IMD said it will continue to closely monitor the system and issue timely updates. People have been advised to follow official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions during heavy rain.
