Kabul, March 31: The International Human Rights Foundation (IHRF) has called for an immediate halt to attacks by Pakistani forces on civilian areas in Afghanistan, urging respect for international law.
The IHRF labeled the shelling of residential neighborhoods as “war crimes” and demanded that the United Nations and other international human rights organizations investigate these violations and hold those responsible accountable.
According to reports, Pakistani forces have targeted civilian areas in Afghanistan’s Paktika, Khost, and Kunar provinces with heavy weaponry and indiscriminate mortar fire.
In a statement released on the social media platform ‘X’, the IHRF noted, “Reports indicate that Pakistani forces have shelled populated areas near the so-called Durand Line with heavy weapons and indiscriminate mortar fire. These attacks have directly targeted civilians and their homes. So far, at least 17 civilians, including women and children, have been injured in these assaults. The use of heavy weaponry has forced many families to flee their homes, raising concerns about a potential humanitarian crisis in the region.”
The IHRF emphasized that attacks on residential properties and agricultural land have caused significant economic damage to local communities and created an atmosphere of fear throughout the area. Under international human rights and humanitarian law, particularly the four Geneva Conventions, it is essential for all parties in armed conflicts to distinguish clearly between military and civilian targets. Indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas that endanger lives are unequivocally war crimes. We urge Pakistani forces to cease attacks on civilian areas immediately and adhere to international law.”
The organization also appealed to humanitarian groups to provide urgent assistance to families displaced or injured due to the conflict. It stressed the need to ensure the safety of innocent people, especially women, during conflicts and to uphold human dignity and human rights principles in all circumstances.
Meanwhile, local Afghan officials reported that a rocket attack from Pakistan resulted in one death and 16 injuries in Kunar province. The shelling occurred near Asadabad, escalating tensions along the border.
Taliban spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat stated that the attack targeted civilian homes around 5 PM on Sunday. He confirmed that the injured were transported to hospitals. According to Afghanistan’s leading news agency, Khama Press, he accused Pakistan of firing into residential areas near the border.
