Life Imprisonment for Man Convicted of Murder, Robbery, and Attempted Rape in Mathura

Mathura, May 20: A significant ruling was delivered by the Special Fast Track Court in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday regarding a case from 2017. The court sentenced a man to life imprisonment for luring passengers into his vehicle, robbing them at gunpoint, attempting to rape a young woman, and murdering her brother in the process.

Judge Vijay Kumar Singh of the Special Fast Track Court (for crimes against women) found the accused, Dilip, guilty of murder, attempted rape, robbery, and illegal possession of a weapon under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on May 3, 2017, when 19-year-old Chandrashekhar from Bharatpur district in Rajasthan was traveling with his cousin, Khushboo. While waiting at the Kosi Kalan bus stand for a ride back to Deeg, they accepted a lift from Dilip.

The accused allegedly assured them he was heading to Deeg but later changed the vehicle’s route towards Govardhan, claiming to avoid an RTO checkpoint. Around midnight, he reportedly stopped the vehicle in a forest area between Jachonda and Junsuti villages.

The prosecution stated that Dilip then threatened the passengers with a country-made pistol, robbed them of their jewelry and cash, and attempted to sexually assault Chandrashekhar’s sister by tearing her clothes. When Chandrashekhar intervened and confronted the accused by breaking the vehicle’s window, a scuffle ensued.

During the altercation, Dilip allegedly shot Chandrashekhar in the head, resulting in his immediate death, and then fled with the stolen items.

Police arrested Dilip near the Govardhan turn. During the investigation, authorities reportedly recovered ₹5,200 from the stolen amount and found the accused wearing the victim’s sandals. Based on his disclosures, police also seized the illegal weapon and empty cartridges allegedly used in the crime.

Government lawyer Subhash Chaturvedi stated that the eyewitness testimony of the victim, Khushboo, along with forensic evidence and the report from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), played a crucial role in securing the conviction.

The court sentenced the accused to life imprisonment under IPC Section 302 (murder) along with a fine of ₹130,000. He was also found guilty under IPC Sections 376/511 (attempted rape), 394 and 411 (robbery and possession of stolen property), and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act for illegal possession of a weapon.

The court directed that the time spent in judicial custody be adjusted against the sentence and ordered his immediate transfer to Mathura District Jail after completing legal formalities.
