
New Delhi, June 13: The central government has appointed Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth as the next Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. He will succeed the current Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, who is set to retire on June 30.
Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Over nearly four decades of a distinguished military career, he has gained extensive experience in operational, strategic, capability development, and institutional domains, significantly contributing to the Indian Army’s combat readiness and long-term transformation.
This general officer has commanded at every level in various operational environments. His command responsibilities include leading an armoured regiment in desert terrain, an armoured brigade in the western theatre, and overseeing counter-insurgency forces in Jammu and Kashmir. As a Lieutenant General, he commanded one of the Indian Army’s premier strike formations, the Sudarshan Chakra Corps.
Following this, he served as the General Officer Commanding of the Delhi Area, managing critical national and international military programs and formal responsibilities. Upon becoming Army Commander, he took charge of the South Western Command and Southern Command. He has the rare distinction of commanding two operational army commands and providing strategic oversight in critical theatres for over two and a half years. He has held several key staff and strategic positions that have significantly impacted operational planning, force management, and capability development.
Recognized for his contributions to force modernization, this general officer has served in significant roles within the strategic planning and capability development departments at Army Headquarters. He has shaped the direction of modernization, capability roadmaps, and long-term force structuring initiatives. His contributions have been vital in aligning operational needs with new technologies and future battlefield requirements.
As a skilled military professional, Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth has consistently excelled in professional military education, achieving top positions in training courses. He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College and has completed the prestigious Command and Staff Course in Paris, reflecting his broad strategic perspective and understanding of contemporary military affairs.
