LG Manoj Sinha Leads Anti-Drug March in Baramulla, Vows to Crack Down on Traffickers

Srinagar, May 12: Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha participated in the ‘Drug-Free Jammu Kashmir’ campaign in Baramulla on Tuesday. He engaged with citizens and joined the march.

During the event, LG Sinha assured the public, “We will pursue every rupee, every asset, and every fake company of drug traffickers. Those ruining our youth’s future will face severe punishment. This people’s movement, inspired by public support, is setting historical records in Jammu and Kashmir, with unprecedented participation in any previous social campaign.”

He also announced a community vaccination program against drugs and a family safety initiative for the campaign’s duration of 69 days. “Just as we trained communities for vaccinations against bacteria or viruses, we will collaborate with religious leaders and social groups to launch community vaccination initiatives in 5 to 10 high-risk areas in each district,” he stated.

The Lieutenant Governor urged schools, mosques, temples, gurdwaras, and NGOs to dedicate one hour each week to strengthen this initiative through awareness. “This will act as an early warning system, monitoring drug-prone areas and transforming them into completely drug-free zones,” he added.

He emphasized that the ‘Family Safety Initiative’ is based on fostering strong family and community ties to prevent addiction. “In the next 69 days, every school, college, and place of worship in Jammu and Kashmir should host weekly family dialogues on substance abuse. These discussions must be open and honest, with local reviews of the campaign to identify and address shortcomings.”

Sinha reported that over the past 31 days, more than 235,000 awareness and outreach programs have been conducted across Jammu and Kashmir. Over 44,000 OPD patients have received treatment, and nearly 700 drug traffickers and dealers have been arrested. Significant actions have been taken against the drug supply chain.

He further stated, “Every financial transaction of drug cartels has been targeted, and assets worth millions created by major traffickers have been seized. Recommendations have been made to revoke 300 driving licenses and over 400 vehicle registrations linked to drug traffickers in the Jammu and Kashmir division.”

The Lieutenant Governor noted that enforcement agencies have seized large quantities of drugs. “More than 3,300 drug stores have been inspected, resulting in the suspension of 150 licenses for violations. Approximately 3,000 CCTV cameras have been installed in drug stores across the union territory. Over two dozen traffickers have been apprehended under the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.”

He added, “In the past 31 days, we have received nearly 3,000 calls for tele-mental health consultations and assistance. I want our response to addiction to be science-based. We do not shame diabetes patients or stigmatize cancer sufferers. Similarly, we must treat and rehabilitate those addicted to substances with respect, integrating them into mainstream society through determination and compassion. Government officials and citizens must unite to monitor, rally against addiction, and promote drug-free villages and towns.”
