Katra, 27 August (Kiran News). A devastating landslide near the Vaishno Devi temple in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the lives of 32 people on Tuesday following heavy rainfall. The information was confirmed by Reasi’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Parveer Singh.

The landslide occurred near the Indraprastha Bhojanalaya at Adhkuwari Cave Temple on the route to the Vaishno Devi shrine.
In a post on X, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) stated that the landslide took place near Indraprastha Bhojanalaya in Adhkuwari, and there are fears of some people being injured. Rescue operations are ongoing with necessary personnel and machinery deployed at the site.
Officials reported that soil erosion and sudden flooding in the Chakki river disrupted traffic on the down line between Pathankot Cantt and Kandrorhi, resulting in the cancellation of 18 trains.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah posted on X that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams reached the site immediately after the incident. He also mentioned that he had spoken to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha regarding the situation. Local administration, along with NDRF teams, are engaged in relief and rescue operations to assist the injured.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and instructed officials to provide immediate assistance to those injured in the accident. Sinha said that officials are closely monitoring the situation across the Jammu region amid heavy rainfall and urged people to follow advisories.
After speaking with Amit Shah, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also posted on X, stating that he discussed the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, especially Jammu province, where continuous heavy rain has caused significant damage and disruption to normal life. Efforts are underway to restore phone and data connectivity as soon as possible.
