Mumbai, July 11: A significant landslide occurred early Saturday morning in the Boathwell area near Sanjauli College in Shimla, causing widespread panic among residents. The landslide struck around 4 AM while most people were asleep in their homes. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties, but three to four residential buildings are currently at risk.
After the landslide, local residents emerged from their homes and stood outside in the rain, waiting for administrative assistance. Many locals expressed frustration, claiming that despite multiple notifications, police arrived late to the scene. As a precaution, affected families were advised to evacuate their homes. However, these families reported a lack of alternative accommodation, leaving them in a state of confusion and fear.
Residents have also raised concerns about the response of local authorities and elected representatives. They reported attempts to contact councilors, legislators, and the mayor since morning, but no one answered their calls or arrived at the site. The community is demanding immediate relief, safe housing arrangements, and security measures in the affected area.
The landslide caused a supporting wall (dhanga) on the road leading to Sanjauli College to collapse, sending debris toward nearby homes. This incident also disrupted access to these homes, affecting residents’ mobility.
Local residents allege that excavation for a private construction project was permitted by the municipal corporation, which weakened the hillside due to continuous rainfall, leading to the landslide. They are urging the authorities to halt construction immediately and conduct a comprehensive geological survey of the area to prevent future incidents.
Community members have warned that the monsoon season has just begun, and if effective measures are not taken promptly, a more severe landslide could occur in the coming days.
It is noteworthy that a devastating landslide occurred in the same area on June 28, 2025, when a large amount of debris and rocks entered residential homes, trapping several children and women inside.
