Lakshya Sen Confident Ahead of BWF World Championships

New Delhi, August 16: Star badminton player Lakshya Sen believes that the competition in men’s singles at the BWF World Championships is so tight that selecting a favorite is challenging.

Speaking to the media at Indira Gandhi Stadium on Sunday, Lakshya stated, “I would say everyone has a chance. I cannot definitively name a favorite. I trust myself to perform well.”

The Indian athlete emphasized that his focus has been on maintaining his physical condition and entering the tournament fresh and sharp.

He mentioned, “Before the last tournament, we had about three to four weeks. The match practice was good. We were already in the season, so we didn’t have much time. However, I continued to work on the physical aspects of my game. I am just trying to maintain that. Towards the end of the tournament, keeping up the pace on the court and getting more match practice is something I am working on.”

For Sen, the early rounds will be particularly crucial. Given the expected close matches in singles, he wants to ensure that no opponent finds their rhythm before settling into the tournament.

Lakshya remarked, “I believe I have coaches. I sit with them to devise a plan on how to play the matches. In such tournaments, a good start is essential. The first round is even more critical. Even if you think an opponent is low-ranked, you don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you are under pressure. You need to start well. In the first round, I would say you focus even more to gain a good rhythm in the tournament.”

He added that his preparation is specifically aimed at peaking for weeks like the World Championships. “When you play so many tournaments, sometimes it’s hard to perform at your best. I mean, these are tournaments where you want to come in with a sharp approach and stay fresh. I prepare for this with my entire team.”

He noted, “The Indian team can gain confidence from local support. My first World Championship was a great experience. The home crowd gives us an advantage. We have been practicing here for a long time. I am very excited to play in this tournament. It is happening in Delhi, and I want to give my best. I am really looking forward to this tournament.”

On the importance of the audience, Sen stated, “Once the crowd arrives, the shuttle behaves differently. So you just have to adapt accordingly. I mean, it looks quite similar overall. The overall conditions for the tournament have been very good. Once the first-round matches begin, we will have a better idea of the court conditions for the second round.”
