
New Delhi, June 8: Kumar Shankar has officially assumed the role of Managing Director at Indraprastha Gas Limited. This company is one of the largest urban gas distribution firms in India, operating a gas distribution network across 33 districts in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, serving millions of consumers.
Kumar Shankar holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. He brings over 32 years of experience in the oil and gas sector. Throughout his extensive career, he has worked in various areas, including the establishment and operation of gas processing plants, management of petrochemical projects, strategic planning, marketing, and regulatory affairs. He also possesses significant experience in the urban gas distribution sector.
Before joining Indraprastha Gas Limited, he served as the Managing Director of Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited, where he led the company to remarkable progress. Under his leadership, the company saw a substantial increase in revenue, profits, and the expansion of domestic piped gas connections, establishing itself as a leading gas distribution company in the country.
Previously, Kumar Shankar worked for three decades in various units of the Gas Authority of India. He held significant responsibilities across several states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and New Delhi. He has deep expertise in gas pipeline tariff determination, open access regulations, and other regulatory matters.
Kumar Shankar has been part of several crucial policy and regulatory reforms in the country’s natural gas sector over the past two decades. He played a vital role in implementing a uniform gas transportation tariff system nationwide, which is considered a significant reform in the industry.
He succeeds Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, who returned to his parent company, the Gas Authority, after completing a three-year term. Indraprastha Gas Limited operates as a joint venture between the Gas Authority and Bharat Petroleum, with participation from the Delhi government.
