New Delhi, August 31: The Chairperson of the Delhi Women’s Commission, Swati Maliwal, condemned the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl on a moving sleeper bus and called for swift justice against the perpetrators.
According to police reports, the incident occurred earlier this month in Greater Noida, where the driver and conductor of the bus allegedly raped the minor. Both suspects have since been arrested.
The police stated that the incident took place on August 4 near Pari Chowk. The victim reported that the accused sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her if she resisted. They later abandoned her near Kashmiri Gate in Delhi.
In an interview with a news agency, Maliwal expressed her outrage, saying, “The gang rape of a girl on a bus is a heinous crime. The police have apprehended the driver and conductor. The Commission has requested a report on the police’s actions and will advocate for a fast-track trial to ensure the harshest punishment for the offenders.”
She emphasized the decline in moral values, stating, “While everyone talks about rights, we are forgetting our fundamental duties. Such incidents are utterly condemnable and unacceptable in society. The government has streamlined legal processes and implemented provisions under laws like POCSO to ensure fast-track trials, severe punishments, and timely justice for victims.”
The accused have been identified as driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep, both arrested on the same day from a parking area in Timarpur.
The police have seized the bus and sent it for forensic examination. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from the route the bus took to trace the sequence of events and track the vehicle’s movements.
The victim, a resident of Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, left home without informing her family after being scolded by her mother about her studies. She was heading to Noida Sector 63 to visit her cousin.
In her statement to the police, the girl mentioned that due to heavy rain and darkness, she mistakenly got off at Pari Chowk. Realizing her mistake, she attempted to find another vehicle and eventually flagged down a sleeper bus. At that time, the bus was empty.
The conductor allegedly told her that the bus was going to Noida Sector 63, prompting her to board. However, the police clarified that the bus was actually returning empty from a workshop in Surajpur after repairs.
Shortly after the bus started moving, the conductor reportedly began to make inappropriate advances towards her. She also alleged that both men sexually assaulted her and threatened her life if she resisted.
After the assault, the accused dropped the girl near Ring Road at Kashmiri Gate in Delhi and fled the scene. She subsequently reported the incident to the police, leading to an investigation.
Kuldeep and Sandeep have been charged with gang rape, kidnapping, and assault.
