New Delhi, April 15: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated on Wednesday that while the party supports the Women’s Reservation Bill, they oppose the manner in which it is being presented. He emphasized that they will voice their objections.
Speaking to the media after a meeting of opposition leaders in Delhi, Kharge reiterated the party’s backing for the Women’s Reservation Bill. However, he expressed serious concerns about its presentation, labeling it as politically motivated. He accused the Modi government of targeting and suppressing opposition parties through this approach.
Kharge further mentioned that the Congress has consistently supported the Women’s Reservation Bill and has advocated for its implementation based on previously passed amendments. He noted that the government appears to be playing tricks regarding the delimitation issue, prompting all opposition parties to unite in their protest in Parliament.
He clarified, “I want to state clearly that we are not against the Women’s Reservation Bill.”
Kharge demanded that the amendment be implemented rather than used as a political weapon. He accused the government of manipulating the delimitation process and assured that all opposition members are united on this issue, having decided to collectively oppose the bill.
He criticized the government’s attempt to link the bill to an ambiguous census and future delimitation processes. He argued that the executive is misusing powers that should remain with institutions and Parliament, allowing for changes in delimitation for political gain. He cited previous instances of such manipulation in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir, asserting that the opposition will continue to fight unitedly on this matter.
