Chandigarh, April 15: Sukhbir Badal, the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), criticized the redistricting of Lok Sabha seats under the Women’s Reservation Bill on Wednesday. He labeled the population-based redistricting process as highly discriminatory towards Punjab.
Badal stated that his party supports a multi-party initiative to oppose this redistricting move.
Elaborating on the discriminatory nature of the redistricting, Badal said in a statement that Punjab is primarily a minority-dominated state. We will be the biggest victims of this population-based redistricting. While Punjab will see only a nominal increase in seats, Haryana is set to experience nearly a hundred percent increase, effectively doubling its representation in the Lok Sabha. Where does that leave us? We are already victims of planned discrimination and injustice.
The Akali Dal president asserted that this redistricting has punished Punjab for adhering to the national agenda on population control, while rewarding states that have ignored those national goals.
Badal described this move as a lethal blow to India’s already fragile federal structure. He claimed it is a conspiracy to hand over control of the country to just four Hindi-speaking states: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan. This would nearly double their power in the Lok Sabha, granting them over 40 percent of the combined strength, rendering other states almost irrelevant.
However, Badal reiterated his party’s unconditional support for the proposed Women’s Reservation Bill, stating that it aligns with the thoughts and principles bestowed upon us by our great Gurus.
The Akali Dal fully supports reservation for women. However, we oppose this move, which is being used to conceal dangerous redistricting maneuvers.
