Charlotte, March 28: Rookie Kon Knueppel has made waves in the NBA following another standout performance for the Charlotte Hornets. On Thursday, he scored 26 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out eight assists, leading the Hornets to a 114-103 victory over the New York Knicks, who were on a seven-game winning streak. Knueppel showcased his shooting skills, hitting 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, and finished with a plus-15 rating in 37 minutes of play.
ESPN senior writer Brian Windhorst highlighted Knueppel’s overall impact on the game during a segment on “NBA Today.” While his shooting efficiency was impressive, Windhorst emphasized the rookie’s contributions in various aspects of the game.
“I think this game highlighted what Kon Knueppel has meant to the Hornets this year,” Windhorst stated. “He had 11 rebounds and eight assists. People in Charlotte knew he could shoot, but they were surprised by his rebounding and distribution skills. He sets screens exceptionally well for someone his age. His impact has been felt across the board.”
Currently, Knueppel is averaging 19.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, shooting 43.8% from three-point range over 72 appearances. He leads all rookies with a total of 1,378 points and is one of only two first-year players with five or more 30-point games.
As the fourth overall pick in the draft, Knueppel set a new NBA record for the most three-pointers made by a rookie in a season, surpassing Keegan Murray’s previous record of 206. He currently leads the league in three-pointers and is just eight away from breaking the franchise record of 260 set by Kemba Walker.
With his consistent performance and the support of his teammates, Knueppel has emerged as a frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award, surpassing Cooper Flagg. The Hornets are now on the brink of making the postseason for the first time since 2016.
