Kolkata, March 12: In response to rising tensions in the Middle East and potential supply disruptions, Kolkata Police have heightened their vigilance against the black market for LPG gas across the city. A senior police official announced this initiative on Thursday.
All police stations in the city have been instructed to closely monitor the movement and distribution of LPG cylinders. To address a possible shortage of commercial cylinders, the police have also decided to implement alternative cooking arrangements, such as induction cookers and microwave ovens, at police barracks.
This decision from the Lalbazar police headquarters came just a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held an emergency meeting with LPG dealers to review the supply situation in the state.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Banerjee directed the LPG dealers to prepare a standard operating procedure (SOP) detailing the available LPG stock and to take measures to prevent black marketing of cylinders.
Police officials emphasized that preventing hoarding and illegal sales of cooking gas is a priority to avoid any crises in Kolkata. All Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of the divisions have been tasked with closely monitoring the situation and ensuring that police stations in their jurisdictions maintain strict surveillance.
The enforcement branch of Kolkata Police has also been assigned the responsibility of monitoring gas supplies. Special attention is being given to gas cylinder warehouses throughout the city, where police teams are checking stock levels and verifying records.
Authorities are also ensuring that LPG cylinders are not diverted beyond authorized customer orders or sold at inflated prices. They are monitoring whether domestic LPG cylinders are being illegally used for commercial purposes.
