Kolkata, April 10: Ahead of the assembly elections in West Bengal, Kolkata Police has ramped up efforts to maintain law and order. Police Commissioner Ajay Nand has instructed senior officers to conduct patrols from 10 PM to 2 AM.
During a meeting held on Thursday, the Commissioner emphasized the need for active presence in various areas at night. He urged officials to ensure strict monitoring of all election-related matters, allowing for immediate action based on the severity of incidents.
The meeting included the city’s Joint Police Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner-level officers, who were also directed to oversee the patrols and checkpoint operations.
Senior officials have been asked to coordinate their efforts with central forces. Special emphasis is being placed on inspecting and monitoring sensitive areas before the elections.
Voting for the 294 assembly seats in West Bengal will occur in two phases on April 23 and 29. In Kolkata, voting will take place on April 29 for 11 seats, with counting scheduled for May 4.
Currently, the state police system is under the control of the Election Commission.
Meanwhile, following unrest during BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s nomination in Bhawanipur, the Election Commission raised concerns about the Police Commissioner’s ability to maintain law and order. In response, Ajay Nand convened a special meeting at the Lalbazar headquarters to discuss security arrangements.
Notably, the Election Commission recently replaced former Commissioner Supratim Sarkar with Ajay Nand ahead of the elections.
Additionally, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction with the police’s role, alleging inadequate security during her nomination march.
In light of these developments, Kolkata Police has appealed to the public to maintain peace and assured that voting will be conducted in a fear-free and fair environment. Strict action will be taken against any attempts to disrupt the process or block polling stations.
The police have urged citizens to vote without fear and to report any obstruction to the nearest police station immediately.
