Kolkata, August 19: The Kolkata High Court has imposed an interim stay on the merit list for the recruitment of 12,000 police constables initiated during the tenure of the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
The recruitment notification was issued in 2024, but allegations of irregularities prompted a petition to the Kolkata High Court.
After extensive hearings, Justice Amrita Sinha ordered the stay on the publication of the merit list until September 30.
The notification for this recruitment was released in 2024, with the written examination conducted in 2025. The interview process was completed by February of this year, during the TMC’s governance.
Numerous complaints regarding the recruitment process led to the case being brought before the High Court. During the hearing, petitioner Sudipta Chakraborty claimed that the guidelines for reservations for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) were not followed.
After considering the arguments, Justice Amrita Sinha issued the interim stay on the merit list until September 30.
The legal dispute over the police constable recruitment began before the West Bengal Assembly elections. The TMC faced a significant defeat in this year’s elections, resulting in the formation of a BJP government in the state.
The Kolkata High Court had previously sought the new BJP government’s stance on the police constable recruitment issue. With the interim stay on the merit list publication, it remains to be seen how Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s new state government will proceed with this matter.
During the previous TMC administration, several controversies arose regarding government recruitment, particularly concerning alleged cash transactions for jobs in schools.
Chief Minister Adhikari recently stated publicly that the areas managed by the previous TMC government are reportedly facing significant disorder and chaos.
