Kolkata, May 21: KMC officials announced on Thursday that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s birth and death registration portal has been partially closed for verifying certificates issued during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) period.
Sources within KMC revealed that there has been an unusual surge in applications for old birth and death certificates during the SIR. These certificates were intended to serve as supporting documents for the revision process.
However, the new state government suspects that the certificates issued during the SIR may not be authentic. As a result, a decision was made to re-verify these documents, leading to the temporary closure of the portal.
An insider from KMC explained that some options will be unavailable for a while due to the partial shutdown of the portal.
Currently, data for existing birth and death cases can still be uploaded, and certificates can be accessed through the portal. However, old birth and death certificates or digital copies will not be available for some time. Additionally, duplicate copies of lost certificates will also be inaccessible for now. This partial closure is expected to be temporary, and all options will soon be restored.
Despite this, officials acknowledged that the portal’s partial shutdown may cause inconvenience to the public. The KMC source emphasized the importance of rechecking the certificates issued during the SIR to determine their authenticity.
They recognized that this decision has created confusion among the public. Many are attempting to access old data, but these options are currently unavailable, leading to disputes between residents and KMC staff.
