Nashville, 23 August (Kiran News). US immigration authorities have indicated that they are planning to deport Kilmarr Abrigo Garcia to Uganda. This development comes after Garcia rejected an offer to remain in jail and accept charges of human trafficking in exchange for being sent to Costa Rica. This information was presented to the court by his defense team on Saturday.

According to reports, the proposal given on Thursday stated that Garcia would stay in jail and plead guilty before being sent to Costa Rica. However, after his release on Friday, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) informed his lawyers that Garcia would be deported to Uganda and must report by Monday.
According to the lawyers, the government gave Garcia the option until Friday evening to accept the Costa Rica proposal by Monday morning, otherwise, the offer would be withdrawn forever. Court documents also included a letter from the Costa Rican government expressing their willingness to accept Garcia as a legal migrant.
Garcia’s case became a contentious issue under former President Donald Trump‘s immigration policy, when he was mistakenly sent to El Salvador in March, even though the court had already acknowledged the risk of violence there. Later, in June, he was brought back to the US by court order and detained on human trafficking charges.
Prosecutors say Garcia can be deported as he entered the US illegally and an immigration judge in 2019 had declared him eligible for deportation, although not to El Salvador. Recently, Uganda has agreed to accept deportees from the US, provided they have no criminal record.
Meanwhile, Garcia has declared himself innocent and requested the court to dismiss the case, stating that these actions are an attempt to punish him for challenging deportation to El Salvador.
