Mumbai, April 5: Kieran Trippier will leave Newcastle United at the end of the season when his contract expires, concluding a four-and-a-half-year tenure at St James’ Park.
The 35-year-old defender joined Newcastle from Atletico Madrid in January 2022 and quickly became a pivotal figure in the club’s revival.
During his time on Tyneside, Trippier made 157 appearances and played a significant leadership role in the dressing room. The England international, who has earned 54 caps for his country, has featured regularly this season with 18 appearances in the Premier League.
Trippier confirmed his departure in a statement released by the club, expressing his emotional connection to Newcastle. “This is where I have felt most at home,” he stated. “It’s emotional, and I’m really going to miss it.”
He also expressed gratitude towards his teammates, reflecting on his journey with the club. “It’s been an amazing journey with you guys,” Trippier said. “I’m going to miss you all, but winning a trophy with you was really special.”
One of the highlights of Trippier’s Newcastle career was during the 2024–25 campaign when the club ended a 50-year wait for major silverware. He played the full 90 minutes as Newcastle triumphed over Liverpool in the EFL Cup final, marking the first major trophy of the club’s modern era and solidifying Trippier’s legacy in Newcastle’s history.
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe praised Trippier’s influence both on and off the pitch. “From the moment he walked through the door, he helped drive standards that changed the club’s trajectory,” Howe remarked. “His leadership skills have been invaluable.”
Trippier arrived at Newcastle during a critical period when the club was battling relegation shortly after a change in ownership. His experience and professionalism helped stabilize the squad and raise expectations within the dressing room.
Before joining Newcastle, Trippier enjoyed a successful career at several clubs. He came through the academy at Manchester City, established himself at Burnley, and later moved to Tottenham Hotspur. Trippier started in the Champions League Final in 2019 for Tottenham before transferring to Atletico Madrid, where he won the La Liga title in 2021.
Newcastle confirmed that Trippier’s final appearance for the club is expected to be in their last league match of the season against Fulham on May 24. The Magpies, currently mid-table in the Premier League, will next face Crystal Palace as they prepare for the closing weeks of the campaign.
