Khelo India Tribal Games: Manikant Completes Gold Hat-Trick, Anjali Munda Shines on Day Two

Raipur, March 26: Karnataka swimmer Manikant L continued his remarkable performance by winning his third consecutive gold medal, while Odisha’s Anjali Munda secured her second gold on the second day of the Khelo India Tribal Games held here on Thursday.

Manikant dominated the men’s 200-meter individual medley, finishing with a time of 2:25.93 seconds to complete his gold hat-trick. He had previously triumphed in the 100-meter breaststroke and 50-meter butterfly events. Tripura’s Riyaz Tripura claimed the silver medal with a time of 2:34.04 seconds, while Odisha’s Kanhu Soren took home the bronze with a time of 2:36.21 seconds.

In the women’s 200-meter individual medley, Anjali Munda, who had already won gold in the 200-meter freestyle on Wednesday, added another gold to her collection with a time of 2:53.82 seconds. Chhattisgarh’s Anushka Bhagat won the silver medal, clocking in at 2:59.33 seconds, much to the delight of the home crowd. This marked her second medal in the games. Odisha’s Anjali Malik secured the bronze with a time of 3:06.13 seconds.

The inaugural edition of these games features nearly 3,800 athletes from 30 states and union territories competing in nine different sports. A total of 106 gold medals are up for grabs in archery, athletics, football, hockey, swimming, weightlifting, and wrestling, while mallakhamba and kabaddi are included as exhibition sports.

Currently, Karnataka leads the medal tally with six gold and two silver medals, followed by Odisha, which has won three gold, one silver, and four bronze medals.

In weightlifting, Assam’s Monika Sonowal and Mizoram’s Isak Malsawmtluanga delivered impressive performances, overcoming injury concerns to win gold medals. Competing in the women’s 48 kg category, Monika lifted 57 kg in the snatch and 75 kg in the clean and jerk, totaling 132 kg to secure the gold medal. Odisha’s Deepa Rani Malik (120 kg) and Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ Alaskan Alina (115 kg) won silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Monika, hailing from Dhemaji district in Assam, had been struggling with a knee injury for three months and was nearly out of the games.

In the men’s 60 kg category, Malsawmtluanga triumphed with a total lift of 235 kg, despite battling a back injury. After trailing in the snatch, where he struggled with 108 kg on his third attempt, he made a strong comeback by successfully lifting 130 kg in the clean and jerk.

Jharkhand’s Babulal Hembrom secured the silver medal with a total lift of 230 kg, while Odisha’s Subrat Nayak finished third with 228 kg.
