New Delhi, February 24: The Central Cabinet has approved a proposal to officially rename the state of Kerala to ‘Keralam.’ The Communist Party of India (CPI) has extended heartfelt congratulations to the people of Kerala following this decision.
This landmark decision, made on February 24, 2026, aims to strengthen Kerala’s historical, linguistic, and cultural identity. The name ‘Keralam’ represents the state’s original and natural form in the Malayalam language, reflecting the continuity of its civilization and collective self-respect.
The CPI noted that this change is a result of the long-standing democratic demand from the people of Kerala. It serves as a corrective measure against the colonial-era Anglicization, affirming India’s multilingual and federal structure.
The party reminded that the Kerala Assembly unanimously appealed to the central government for the name change in June 2024, following a proposal from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. This proposal symbolizes broad consensus among various sections and political parties in the state, reflecting the popular will of the people.
The CPI praised the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government for its consistent and principled efforts. The LDF has advanced this demand at both state and national levels, formally presenting it in the Assembly and engaging in dialogue with the central government.
This decision demonstrates the government’s commitment to preserving Kerala’s linguistic and cultural identity. The party specifically commended CPI’s Rajya Sabha leader P. Santosh Kumar, who vigorously raised this issue in the Rajya Sabha on July 22, 2024, bringing Kerala’s voice to the national platform. This decision proves that sustained democratic struggle, legal processes, and public movements can lead to positive change.
The CPI emphasized that respecting linguistic diversity does not weaken but rather strengthens national unity. The party reiterates its commitment to safeguarding India’s pluralism, federalism, and the right of states to express their cultural and linguistic identities with dignity.
