Kochi, June 1: The Kerala High Court has strongly condemned the prevailing culture of harassment in certain medical colleges. On Monday, the court suggested forming a high-level committee to investigate allegations of teacher misconduct and recommend corrective measures to ensure student safety.
These remarks were made during the hearing of an anticipatory bail petition filed by a professor from a dental college linked to a recent student suicide case. However, the court’s comments extended beyond the specifics of this individual case, addressing a broader and serious issue within professional educational institutions.
Justice A. Badaruddeen stated that the problem has escalated to a level that necessitates a systematic investigation by the state government. He remarked during the proceedings that medical colleges in Kerala are ruining students. There is no doubt about it. They are treating students, including postgraduates, with extreme cruelty. Numerous complaints have been lodged. This is a very serious matter.
Expressing concern over many students remaining silent due to fear of academic repercussions, the court noted that victims often hesitate to challenge teachers or college authorities despite enduring ongoing harassment.
The judge proposed the establishment of an independent committee to gather confidential feedback from students, assess the extent of the problem, and recommend remedial measures.
The court also highlighted a dangerous cycle of institutional behavior, likening it to the ‘Sas Syndrome,’ where individuals who have been victims of harassment repeat similar practices once they gain power.
These comments come at a time when there are ongoing complaints from students across vocational colleges regarding mental health issues, academic pressure, and alleged bullying by teachers.
The issue gained renewed attention following the death of a dental college student in Kannur earlier this year. This incident sparked a widespread debate about caste discrimination, academic harassment, and accountability in higher education institutions.
Student organizations and education activists have long demanded a robust grievance redressal mechanism, an independent complaint system, and better oversight of vocational colleges.
