Kerala Government to Honor World Cup Hero Sanju Samson on March 16

Thiruvananthapuram, March 15: The Kerala government will honor wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson for his pivotal role in leading the Indian cricket team to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026. This recognition will take place on March 16, as confirmed by the state’s sports ministry.

According to the ministry, Sanju Samson, a member of the championship-winning Indian team and the tournament’s standout player, will be celebrated during a ceremony at 4 PM at the Thiruvananthapuram Central Stadium. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will attend the event, which will be chaired by Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman. Other state ministers, chief secretaries of various departments, and distinguished guests will also be present.

The state sports ministry has made elaborate arrangements to welcome Sanju Samson. Previously, he received a warm reception at the airport upon his arrival in Thiruvananthapuram after the World Cup.

Sanju Samson emerged as one of the most talked-about players in the T20 World Cup 2026 due to his impressive performances. Although he missed most of the initial matches, he was included in the playing eleven against Zimbabwe in the Super-8 stage, where he scored 24 runs off 15 balls, showcasing his confidence. His subsequent three remarkable innings played a crucial role in securing India’s championship title and etched his name in cricket history.

In the quarterfinals against the West Indies, Samson scored an unbeaten 97 runs off 50 balls, propelling India into the semifinals. He followed this with an impressive 89 runs off 42 balls against England, leading India to the finals. In the championship match against New Zealand, he scored 89 runs off 46 balls, scripting India’s title victory. Samson was named Player of the Match in both the quarterfinal and semifinal matches. Throughout the tournament, he played only five matches, amassing 321 runs at an astounding strike rate of nearly 200. His performances thrilled cricket fans worldwide.
