Gardner Embraces Fearless Return Ahead of 100th T20 Match

New Delhi, March 19: Australia’s women’s cricket team vice-captain Ashley Gardner is rekindling the fearless spirit that marked the start of her career.

The Australian team is gearing up for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England. This all-rounder aims to regain her best form before the major tournament. Gardner is just one match away from completing 100 T20 International matches.

When Australia faces the West Indies in St. Vincent, Gardner will become the seventh Australian woman to reach this milestone. Meanwhile, the team is eager to overcome recent semi-final disappointments. Australia faced a defeat against host India in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 and was eliminated by South Africa in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Gardner told Cricket Australia, “I used to be a player who felt no fear. But as I’ve grown older and wiser, a bit of fear has crept into my perspective on life and cricket.”

She added, “I’m trying to reignite that fearlessness. It’s not about being reckless, but in the way I play, I always try to dominate. So when I’m under pressure, I really try to tap into that fearlessness and utilize it. That’s when I play my best cricket.”

The 28-year-old has averaged 25.11 runs while playing in the middle order for Australia in the T20 format. She noted, “In this format, my role in the middle order can be quite challenging. You might come in when the team is in a strong position or when we’re struggling. It requires quickly understanding the situation and finding your rhythm fast. Perhaps that’s something I haven’t been doing consistently well in this format for a while.”

Gardner views the upcoming West Indies series as the final preparation for the World Cup, comparing it to the significant changes the team underwent after the 2017 World Cup.

She reflected, “If I think back to the 2017 World Cup we lost, we played with a lot of hesitation. Then we had a shift in our game; we thought, ‘Let’s play openly, without fear.’ Since then, we’ve adopted that mindset. Now, it’s become an unwritten rule in the team that whenever a new player joins, they must play cricket in this manner.”
