Kerala Congress MPs Directed to Gather in New Delhi to Oppose FCRA Bill

New Delhi, April 1: With just eight days left until the assembly elections in Kerala on April 9, the Congress party’s national leadership has issued a crucial directive to its MPs. They are urged to participate in the ongoing parliamentary session in New Delhi.

This move signals their intent to unite against the controversial amendments proposed to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).

K.C. Venugopal, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee, stated that this action is a response to the central government’s attempt to introduce the amendment bill at a time when many MPs are busy campaigning in election-bound states.

He accused the government of employing a calculated strategy to minimize parliamentary scrutiny and opposition during this critical period.

Describing the proposed amendments as “completely unconstitutional,” Venugopal warned that these changes could have far-reaching implications for civil society. He argued that the provisions would severely impact non-governmental organizations and community-based groups, particularly those representing minority communities.

“This is not merely a legal change; it is an attempt to systematically weaken institutions that play a vital role in social service and democratic engagement,” he asserted. Venugopal announced that the Congress party would not allow the bill to pass “under any circumstances” and would mount a strong political and parliamentary challenge.

To rally opposition support, Congress plans to hold a protest outside Parliament at 10:30 AM against the bill. Venugopal criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Modi, accusing them of promoting a divisive agenda.

He claimed that this bill represents another attempt to foster distrust and polarization among communities. Venugopal alleged that it could be used to exert pressure on various organizations, including Christian institutions in states like Kerala.

He highlighted that the proposed law contains stringent provisions that could tighten the grip on voluntary organizations.

Leaders from all churches in Kerala have united against this government initiative. However, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the state BJP president fighting a ‘do or die’ battle in the Nemom assembly constituency, stated that the Congress is unnecessarily raising this issue related to the FCRA.
