Davangere, April 1: The Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has condemned the Congress government’s decision not to make Hindi a mandatory passing subject in the Class 10 board examinations. Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition (LOP) R. Ashok made this statement after releasing the party’s manifesto for the Davangere South Assembly constituency.
Referring to the three-language formula in Karnataka, Ashok questioned who implemented it. He highlighted that Mahatma Gandhi served as the president of the Hindi Promotion Sabha for 30 years, and former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi actively promoted the Hindi language.
He remarked, “Those opposing the renaming of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) are now silent when Hindi is not being made mandatory.”
Ashok emphasized that the state government should have clarified at the beginning of the academic year that Hindi would not be compulsory, rather than during the examination period.
Earlier, Ashok accused the state government of jeopardizing students’ futures with this decision. He asserted that the move was politically motivated, not driven by a love for Kannada.
He noted that the Karnataka education department abruptly removed Hindi as a third language from all schools. This decision came at a time when students were preparing for their exams, leaving millions who had studied Hindi in a challenging situation.
