Thiruvananthapuram, February 9: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched a strong attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. He accused them of promoting open hatred and violence against Muslims, undermining India’s constitutional values.
In a sharply worded Facebook post, Vijayan stated that the circulation of a video allegedly inciting violence against Muslims has deeply shaken the secular fabric of society and highlighted the dangerous political direction of the BJP.
According to Vijayan, the video shared from the official Assam BJP handle portrays Chief Minister Sarma as seemingly calling for public violence against Muslims. He described this act as unprecedented and extremely concerning, especially given the involvement of a person in a constitutional position.
The Chief Minister emphasized that such actions directly assault the foundations of India’s secular and democratic system. Vijayan also pointed out that Sarma’s repeated hate-filled speeches and derogatory remarks about the ‘Miya’ Muslim community in Assam are not isolated incidents but part of the BJP’s “inhumane divisive politics.”
He alleged that as the Assam Assembly elections approach, there is a deliberate attempt to stoke communal polarization to consolidate majority votes, even if it means challenging constitutional values.
Raising a critical question, Vijayan asked how it is justifiable to entrust the governance of a state to someone who allegedly makes genocidal statements against minorities in a secular republic.
He also questioned the silence of the BJP’s national leadership, suggesting it indicates tacit approval. Vijayan noted that Sarma has openly expressed views that the BJP and its ideological parent, the RSS, hesitate to voice publicly.
The post also referenced Sarma’s political past, mentioning that he was once a senior Congress leader and influential minister in the Assam government before joining the BJP in 2015. Vijayan accused Sarma of emerging as a key architect of the BJP’s communal strategy in the Northeast since then.
He concluded that the absence of any disciplinary action against Sarma, despite his statements marginalizing Muslim minorities, clearly indicates that these views are not exceptions but reflect the core ideology of the BJP.
