Thiruvananthapuram, February 2: The Kerala Assembly witnessed a heated uproar on Monday when Speaker A.N. Shamsheer denied permission to bring a suspension motion for discussion on the alleged generous parole given to convicted criminals linked to the CPI(M).
The decision triggered protests led by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), resulting in an opposition walkout under the leadership of opposition leader V.D. Satheesan.
The suspension motion was moved by K.K. Rema, the widow of slain CPI(M) rebel leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, who demanded a debate on the issue. The opposition accused the government of selective and arbitrary use of parole provisions, especially favouring convicts connected to the ruling party. The Speaker rejected the notice, stating the matter was not fit for a suspension debate.
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister M.B. Rajesh intervened, saying there was no emergency warranting a suspension motion and the issue could be raised as a submission. After the refusal, opposition members raised slogans inside the house, accusing the government of protecting criminals.
As the noise escalated, Satheesan stood up to protest and accused the government of suppressing debate on an issue of public importance. He then led the UDF legislators in walking out of the Assembly.
Outside the Assembly, K.K. Rema said that the convicts in the T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case had received parole for more than 1,000 days in total. She alleged that repeated parole grants weakened the sense of justice and caused deep pain to the victim’s family.
She claimed that extraordinary leniency was being shown to those convicted of a brutal political murder. Satheesan accused the Pinarayi Vijayan government of being unusually generous in granting parole to Chandrasekharan’s killers.
He further alleged that the Chief Minister was unwilling to stop this practice due to fear of those elements, a charge strongly denied by the ruling front. The government maintained that parole was granted strictly according to existing rules and procedures.
