Kashi Vishwanath Temple: A Sacred Abode of Lord Shiva in Uttarkashi

Uttarkashi, August 29: Uttarakhand is renowned for its ancient temples and the rich stories associated with them. Among these sacred sites is the historic Kashi Vishwanath Temple, often referred to as the Kashi of North India, located in Uttarkashi district along the banks of the Bhagirathi River.

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the oldest and most revered temples in the region. Devotees from all corners of the country visit to seek blessings from Bholenath.

Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami praised the temple’s grandeur. He shared a special video of the temple on his social media platform X, stating, “The Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttarkashi district is a sacred and prominent center for the worship of Lord Shiva. Here, devotees worship Mahadev, experiencing spiritual peace and divine energy. If you visit Uttarkashi, make sure to visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.”

A significant mythological belief has persisted for many years regarding this temple. Locals assert that in the second phase of the Kali Yuga, this site will be a major residence for Lord Shiva. It is also said that if Kashi (Varanasi) were to become submerged, Lord Vishwanath would reside in Uttarkashi.

Adjacent to the Vishwanath Temple is the Shakti Temple. A notable feature of this temple is the trident, which bears an inscription detailing the temple’s construction. According to this inscription, the temple was built by King Ganeshwar and his son Guha, a great warrior, who also commissioned the trident.

The trident stands 26 feet tall, with a base circumference of 8 feet 9 inches and a top circumference of 18.5 inches. There is also a smaller Shiva temple and a trident with a Sanskrit inscription in the town of Gopeshwar, but it is significantly smaller in size.

The restoration of this ancient temple was carried out in 1857 by Maharani Khaneti. This site lies on the route of the Char Dham Yatra, particularly towards Gangotri Dham, attracting a large number of pilgrims and tourists year-round.
