Karnataka Home Minister Orders CID Investigation into Custodial Death in Tumakuru

Bengaluru, March 20: Karnataka’s Home Minister G. Parameshwara has assigned the Crime Investigation Department (CID) to investigate a reported custodial death in Tumakuru district.

During a media briefing in Bengaluru, the Home Minister stated that the death occurred during interrogation on Thursday. The exact cause of death remains unclear, prompting the decision to hand the case over to the CID for an impartial investigation.

When questioned about allegations from the deceased’s family, who claim that the death resulted from police brutality, he assured that the truth would emerge once the investigation concludes. He emphasized that if the death was indeed due to police violence, it would be revealed in the inquiry. Additionally, he noted that the post-mortem report would also clarify the cause of death.

The Home Minister further stated that the CID would conduct a thorough investigation and submit its report to the government. He made it clear that if any police misconduct is uncovered, strict action would be taken against the officers involved.

In the same press interaction, he also addressed the recent incident in Hubli, where two minors died while filming dangerous motorcycle stunts. He remarked that many youths engage in risky behaviors for entertainment, such as speeding or performing stunts, often while recording videos. Although the government and police have made significant efforts to control such activities, some individuals evade monitoring and fall victim to tragic accidents. He urged young people to avoid such dangerous pursuits and prioritize their safety.

G. Parameshwara mentioned, “We are keeping an eye on reckless motorcycle riding in Bengaluru. However, many youths take to the streets early in the morning to perform stunts, making it difficult for police to apprehend them. The police are continuously working to raise awareness among young people about the dangers of such behavior.”

Meanwhile, the incident of a man’s death in police custody at the Huliyar police station in Tumakuru has sparked tension in the area. Villagers allege that the death was caused by police assault.

The deceased has been identified as Kantaraju (45). Reports indicate that police had brought six individuals to the station on charges of playing cards, during which Kantaraju died in custody.

Following this incident, angry villagers surrounded the Huliyar police station, blocking its entrance and demanding action against the responsible officers.
