Karnataka Considers Limiting Social Media Access for Children

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is exploring options to restrict children’s use of social media due to the associated risks, Rural Development, Panchayat Raj, IT and BT Minister Priyank Kharge said in the Assembly on Friday.

This statement came following concerns raised by senior BJP legislator S. Suresh Kumar about child safety on social media, urging the government to take appropriate measures.

Minister Kharge stated, “The issue raised by the senior leader is very serious. Finland has already made decisions on this, the UK is considering similar steps, and Australia imposed restrictions on children’s social media use two months ago. We are also discussing the responsible use of artificial intelligence and social media to determine necessary actions. The matter is still under consideration.”

He added, “Early exposure to social media is causing harm to our children. Goa has taken some initiatives in this regard. While we may not be able to fully control it, we must take certain steps.”

Regarding political responsibility, BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar emphasized that such decisions should transcend party lines. He expressed concern that debates and counter-debates among political parties often overshadow discussions on key public issues such as health and education. “The common man passing by the Assembly wonders if their issues will ever be addressed,” he said.

He further questioned whether ordinary citizens are truly part of the discussions, noting, “The government makes the Governor address the House as ‘My Government.’ If governance were done properly, the common man would also say it is ‘My Government.’ Until then, the system becomes ineffective.”

The Karnataka government’s consideration reflects a growing awareness of the impact of social media on children and the need for regulatory measures.
