New Delhi, March 26: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a grave warning regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, stating that the war has reached a perilous turning point. He cautioned that this clash has evolved into an uncontrolled “chain reaction,” which could lead to a global crisis beyond regional borders.
Guterres highlighted the escalating humanitarian tragedy, civilian casualties, and potential economic shocks, urging all parties, including the United States, Israel, and Iran, to immediately cease hostilities and work towards peace.
Speaking to reporters, Guterres noted that he had warned of the risk of a “chain reaction” just hours after the conflict began. Now, more than three weeks later, the war has spiraled out of control.
He stated that this conflict has crossed boundaries that leaders never anticipated. The world now stands on the brink of another major war, a surge in humanitarian suffering, and a profound global economic downturn. The situation has escalated significantly.
Guterres mentioned that he has been in constant contact with many people in the region and around the world. Various initiatives for dialogue and peace are underway, and they must succeed.
His message to the United States and Israel is clear: now is the time to end the war, as humanitarian suffering is intensifying. Civilian deaths are rising, and the global economic impact is becoming increasingly devastating.
To Iran, he conveyed that it must cease attacks on its neighbors. The Security Council has condemned these assaults and called for their cessation, reiterating the need to respect navigation rights and freedoms in crucial maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz. Civilians across the region and beyond are suffering severe consequences and living in an atmosphere of deep insecurity.
During his recent visit to Lebanon, Guterres witnessed some of these outcomes firsthand. He emphasized that the war must stop there as well.
