Karnataka Considers Bus Fare Hike Amid Rising Fuel Costs, Says CM Shivakumar

Bengaluru, June 21: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Saturday that the state is contemplating an increase in RTC bus fares. He highlighted a significant price difference of approximately ₹40 per liter between diesel purchased by private operators and that acquired by the state transport corporation’s depots.

While previous fare hikes were linked to rising fuel prices, the government aims to strike a careful balance between the financial stability of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and public convenience.

After a cabinet meeting at Vidhana Soudha, Shivakumar addressed reporters, emphasizing the necessity of KSRTC’s continued operation while also protecting passenger interests. He assured that any decision would prioritize public welfare.

Recent fuel price hikes across the state have imposed an additional burden of nearly ₹40 crore daily, leading to significant losses for transport corporations.

The price difference mentioned by Shivakumar refers to the disparity between the rates at which private operators and large industrial buyers purchase diesel, compared to the retail prices that government transport corporations, such as KSRTC and BMTC, must pay at regular retail outlets.

Shivakumar also announced plans to strengthen Karnataka’s legal department in New Delhi to better handle pending cases in the Supreme Court. He expressed dissatisfaction with the functioning of the Resident Commissioner’s office, stating that measures are being taken to reorganize it and enhance its efficiency.

The government will establish a dedicated team of officials to identify and secure more projects and schemes from the central government for Karnataka. This team will study initiatives implemented in other states, including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat, to identify opportunities for central funding and programs.

Shivakumar mentioned that he recently met with Karnataka officials stationed in Delhi and received several suggestions to accelerate the state’s development. The advisory team will also include retired senior IAS and IPS officers.

Additionally, the government approved an extension until October 31, 2026, for farmers voluntarily donating land under a significant development initiative covering 1,777 acres across 13 villages in Channarayapatna Hobli, Devanahalli Taluk, Bengaluru Rural District.

The cabinet has also sanctioned ₹80 crore for the construction of Karnataka Bhavan-IV in New Delhi through the Karnataka Bhavan Welfare Board, aimed at assisting students preparing for UPSC and other competitive exams. This facility will provide accommodation and other essential services in one location, with half of the seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, while the remaining half will be available for students from other communities.
