Karnataka Chief Minister Criticizes Central Government Over Fuel Price Hike

Bengaluru, May 15: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sharply criticized the central government for the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices. He accused Prime Minister Modi’s administration of burdening ordinary citizens to conceal its economic failures.

In a press release, Siddaramaiah described the ₹3 per liter hike in petrol prices as a “publicly opposed decision,” asserting that it would severely impact the daily lives of citizens.

He stated that the Modi government has once again punished the public for its failures by raising petrol and diesel prices by ₹3 per liter. “This is not just a price increase; it is another direct attack on the daily lives of ordinary Indians,” he emphasized.

The Chief Minister alleged that the central government’s failures in foreign policy, poor economic management, and inability to control inflation have shifted the entire burden onto the citizens.

Referring to fuel prices in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah noted that petrol has surpassed ₹106 per liter, while diesel is nearing ₹94 per liter.

He warned that this increase would also lead to higher transportation costs and prices of essential goods. “The prices of vegetables, groceries, milk, construction costs, school van fees, taxi and auto fares, agricultural input costs, and nearly every essential item will be affected. Farmers, laborers, small traders, women managing household budgets, and the middle class will bear the brunt of this,” he added.

The Chief Minister accused the central government of imposing heavy taxes during periods of low crude oil prices without passing the benefits on to consumers.

Siddaramaiah claimed that when crude oil prices were low, the Modi government did not provide adequate relief to the public. Instead, it filled its coffers with heavy taxes, but when prices rise, the burden is immediately placed on citizens. “This is not governance; it is exploitation,” he asserted.

He further accused the central government of failing to control inflation, protect the rupee, and manage the economy effectively.

Siddaramaiah concluded by stating that Prime Minister Modi seems more eager to protect his “capitalist friends” than to safeguard ordinary citizens.
